How do I lodge a notice for gazettal?

Log in to your Gazette account or sign up if you do not have an account. Clicking ‘Lodgement’ under the ‘My Actions’ dropdown will take you to the online lodgement form. Complete the form as indicated and upload your notice PDF, selecting the intended publication date. Once you submit, the lodgement will be added to the list under ‘View lodgements’, with a status indicating it has been lodged.

Note— For urgent publication outside of the regular Gazette (Fridays), please select the proposed date of publication and provide reasoning for the urgency. For same day publication, the notice should be lodged no later than 5pm. After lodging, please advise nswgazette.help@pco.nsw.gov.au of the requested urgent gazettal, together with the approval of a director or executive director for the urgent publication. A Gazette team member will respond between 8:30am and 5pm on weekdays to confirm the request will be processed.

Can I lodge more than one notice at a time?

Yes, you have two options to lodge more than one notice at a time, provided all the notices have the same legislative requirement.

You can lodge a single PDF that includes multiple notices by either—

  • creating a separate Word document for each notice > saving each document as a PDF > merging the PDFs into one larger document, or
  • creating a single Word document that includes all the notices > saving it as a PDF.

The separate notices can each start on a new page in the combined PDF or run on consecutively.

Alternatively, you can select multiple files to upload at once. The files need to be selected at the same time, rather than one at a time, and we recommend moving all relevant files to the same folder on your drive before uploading. The system will combine these files into one PDF.

Please note that in both cases only one reference number will be assigned. If you require separate reference numbers, please complete the lodgement form separately for each notice.

How do I know if my notice needs to be tabled in Parliament?

Instruments subject to the Interpretation Act 1987, section 40 are required to be tabled in Parliament following their publication. PCO compiles a list of instruments published in the preceding week and provides the list to Parliament each Monday. Both Houses may consider the instruments and move to disallow an instrument under the Interpretation Act, section 41.

If your Gazette notice needs to be tabled, the Act or instrument under which the notice is made will include a provision specifying one of the following—

  • that the Interpretation Act, sections 40 and 41 apply, or
  • that the notice is required to be tabled in Parliament.

Common types of Gazette notices that need to be tabled include practice notes, the reservation of land as a National Park, rules of court, guidelines, proclamations and orders.

It is the responsibility of the department or agency submitting a notice for publication in the Gazette to advise if the notice requires tabling. You will not be able to lodge your notice until this question is answered. The Parliamentary Counsel’s Office will then provide the tabling information to Parliament on your behalf.

For further guidance as to whether your notice requires tabling, please consult your department or agency’s legal team.

My notice was lodged after the deadline had passed. Will it still be included?

Your notice will be included in the following week’s Gazette. If you require other arrangements, please submit a support request or email us at nswgazette.help@pco.nsw.gov.au. Please also quote your unique lodgement number which can be found on the confirmation of lodgement.

I’ve lodged my notice but need to replace it. How do I do this?

Log in to your Gazette account and select ‘View lodgements’. Click on the appropriate lodgement, which will open the lodgement form as originally submitted. Click ‘Withdraw’ to withdraw the lodgement from publication. The PDF will not be published.

Once withdrawn, you can then submit a new lodgement with a replacement notice PDF.

Note— You can only withdraw a lodgement prior to the midday Thursday deadline. If you are lodging a replacement notice, ensure you do so before the deadline passes for publication the following Friday.

How do I know if my notice has been gazetted?

Gazettes are published every Friday unless alternative arrangements are made. You will received an automated email to advise that your notice has been published.

Alternatively, you can log into your account and select ‘My lodgements’ to see a list of your previously lodged notices. The status of the notice will have changed to “Published” and a link to the relevant Gazette will appear alongside.

To view your published notice, navigate to the Catalogue page and view the most recent Gazette under the category you selected when lodging your notice. Your notice will be contained within, stamped with a unique identification number in the bottom-left corner.

What should I do if there is a mistake in my published notice?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to alter a notice that has already been gazetted. If the error is that the notice did not match the approved instrument, an erratum notice can be gazetted to ‘correct’ the original gazette notice—it should be lodged in the same way as the original notice and will be published in the next available gazette.

We suggest you use the erratum template to ensure you include all required details and lodge the erratum via the portal in the usual way. For more information about correcting an error, you can also email us at nswgazette.help@pco.nsw.gov.au .

If the error was in the approved instrument itself, the instrument may need to be re-made and a fresh gazette notice prepared and lodged.

My notice needs urgent gazettal. How do I arrange for this?

For urgent gazettal, you must have approval from a director or executive director to request the publication. Please lodge your notice PDF through the online lodgement form, selecting the proposed date for publication and providing a reason for the urgency. For same-day publication, the notice should be lodged no later than 5pm. Please email nswgazette.help@pco.nsw.gov.au to advise you have submitted an urgent notice and attach the appropriate approval. A Gazette team member will respond between 8:30am and 5pm on weekdays to confirm the request will be processed.

My notice requires gazettal outside of regular work hours. How do I request this?

PCO requests as much advance notice as possible for gazettal outside of work hours. Please contact nswgazette.help@pco.nsw.gov.au during regular work hours to discuss alternative arrangements.

Outside of regular work hours, please contact the Director, Legislation Editing and Parliament via nswgazette.help@pco.nsw.gov.au to request the gazettal of the notice. Advance notice is appreciated.

I need help finding a previously published notice or Gazette

Published Gazettes can be found by browsing through the list on the Catalogue page or using the search function on the Search page. For Gazettes published prior to 1 February 2001, please visit Trove.

Each gazetted notice published between 1 January 2018 and 30 June 2024 has a unique number in a bottom corner and beginning with “n”. For notices published after 1 July 2024, the unique number begins with “NSWGG”. These identifiers can be used to search for the correct notice. Alternatively, you can search key words or phrases to locate a particular notice.
